What is a widget? Basically, it’s webpage(s) that runs on your phone independently without the need of web browser.

A simple widget comprises of at least 3 files. They are:
- Info.plist [contains meta data]
- main.html [main contents in the HTML page]
- main.js [JavaScript file which is the core of your application]

In additional, you can include:
- main.css [Style sheet that beautifies you GUI]
- Icon.png [logo of your application]

In order to demonstrate how we can create a widget, I will go through the steps of creating a temperature converter widget.

1. Create Info.plist

Above is the format you need to follow. The string tag that follows DisplayName tells WRT the name of your application.
Identifier is similar to the java’s terminology of a package. Lastly, MainHTML determines the page to be called during the execution.

You can use Microsoft Paint if you are using windows, otherwise use any image editing software that allows you to create PNG image.
Do take note that the image that you are going to create has to be a 88×88 pixel image.

5. Compiling

Put all the files that you have created in a folder and name the folder after the name of your application. Use WinRar to create a zip out of the folder and rename the extension from zip to wgz.

If you do not have a symbian S60 phone to test out your application, you can always download a S60 3rd Edition Feature pack 2 emulator off official symbian website. However, you are required to register as a member before any actual downloading can take place.

The Oxford dictionary defines faith as: ‘reliance or trust in a person.’

The Bible definition of faith is more meaningful. It tells us that ‘faith is a substance;’ a spiritual substance which resides in a believer’s mind. Though faith is as invisible as thought, faith is infinitely more powerful than thought. Faith motivates thought, which in turn expresses itself in words or deeds (often called works).
The opposite of faith is doubt. Doubt is also a substance with enormous latent power. On the Day of Judgement a person’s faith or doubt will act as evidence for or against him/her. Allow me to expand on these two definitions with the help of Scripture.

Living Faith is Obedience

Tips On Screwing up an Interview

1. Be unprepared. Interview matters should not be on your mind at all times. Don't even think about it even minutes before the interview is conducted.

2. When the interviewer prompt you questions, make them repeat a few times. (Either for fun or you have hearing problem.)

3. When answering questions, do not think or try to phrase your answer. Just say what you have on your mind. (Often you will say some unrelated or nonsensical things)

4. BE NERVOUS AT ALL TIMES (This is really an importatnt factor to screw up your interview, try to be nervous even if you are not.)

Deadlock
A deadlock is a situation where a group of two or more process/threads each holds at least one resource while making a request on another and all request cannot be satisfied because the requested resource is held by another process that is being blocked or waiting for another resource.

Four Conditions for Deadlock to occur:
- Mutual Exclusive: Once a process has been allocated a particular resource, the threads in the process have exclusive use of the resource. No other processes can use a resource while it is allocated to a process.

- Hold and Wait: A process hold a resource at the same time it requests another one.

- Circular Wait: A situation can rise in which process P1 holds resource R1 while one of its threads requests resource R2, and process P2 while one of its threads requests resource R1.

- No Preemption: Resources can be release only by the explicit action authority.

Four Approaches of managing Deadlock
- Prevention
- Avoidance
- Detection & Recovery
- Manual Intervention

Banker’s Algorithm (Deadlock Avoidance)
When a new process enters the system, it must declare the maximum number of resources it needs. The system will determine whether allocations of these resources will leave system in a safe state. If yes, resources are allocated. If no, the process will wait until some other process release enough resources.

-P(x): This blocks the process/thread if the resource is not available.

-V(x): This increment of counter, indication that a process/thread has finished with the critical resource.

Difference between Asynchronous IPC and Synchronous IPC

For Asynchronous IPC, the sending or the receiving operation will not cause the process/thread to block.

While in Synchronous IPC, the operation will cause the process/thread to block in the following situations:

-If the receiving party is not listening, in the case of the sending operation.

-If the sending party is not sending yet, in case the case of the receiving operation.

Scheduling
- Scheduling is the task of managing CPU sharing among a pool of ready processes or threads and it is only possible if context switching facility exist.

- A Scheduler chooses a ready thread to allocate to the CPU when available.

- A Schedule Policy determines when it is time for a thread to be removed from the CPU and allocate it to another thread.

- The Scheduling Mechanism determines how process manager can determine it is time to interrupt the CPU and how thread can be allocated to and removed from CPU.

Scheduling Mechanism
Consist of 3 Logical Parts:
- Enqueuer: help to lineup process (in ready list)
- Dispatcher: try to bring the process to CPU so that the process can start executing
- Context Switcher: save state of old process and switch to a new process

Invoking the Scheduler (A mechanism to call the scheduler)
- Voluntary Call: Process blocks itself and calls the scheduler
- Involuntary Call: External force(interrupt) blocks the process and calls the scheduler

Sharing of CPU
- Voluntary CPU Sharing: also known as non-preemptive (not forced) scheduling
o Process voluntarily release the CPU to be reallocated to other process, usually happens after the process s ends or process executes a system call to release CPU (e.g. yield machine instruction).

- Involuntary CPU Sharing: also known as preemptive (forced) scheduling
o Uses interrupt system to periodically force an interruption of any process’s execution. Interrupt is generated by an internal timer, which the timer is usually programmable by software so that the Interval (Time Slice) can be adjusted by the OS.

Scheduling Performance
If a process continually gets ignored by the scheduler, even though it is ready, this phenomenon is called Starvation.

Non-preemptive Scheduler
- First-Come-First-Served (FCFS): Scheduler picks up first job to arrive in the ready list.
- Shortest Job First (SJF): Scheduler picks up shortest job to arrive in the ready list.
- Priority (PR): Scheduler picks up the job with highest priority in the ready list.

Preemptive Scheduler
- Shortest Job First (SJF): Scheduler picks up shortest job to arrive in the ready list.

Process
A Process is a binary program in execution.
A Process consists of:
- A binary Program
- Data on which the program will execute
- Resources required for execution ( e.g. files, devices which contains or provides the data)
Note: In classic process design, there is only one execution engine for each process. In another word, there is only one thread in a process. However, modern process can consist of multiple execution engines.

Thread
A Thread is a single execution engine capable of performing a series of instruction.
Note: In a multiple Threaded process, each thread needs to maintain its own set of data in order to perform its own series of instructions.
Thread specific data is private to the thread. This data is usually stored in a stack.

A Thread data consists of:
- Program counter
- Status of the thread
- Processor registers
- Stack space

Threads Within the same process shares the same:
- Program code
- Data
- Resources

Note: Sometimes threads are also called lightweight processes.
Process in UNIX

OS Kernel creates a process descriptor to manage process.

The Von Neumann Architecture
It has a fixed set of electronic parts which can be manipulated to perform various tasks determined by a variable program.

It consists of:
- A central processing unit ( CPU )
- A primary memory unit
- A collection of I/O devices
- Buses to interconnect the components

Central Processing Unit
- ALU: it is Responsible for performing arithmetic and logical operations

- Control Unit: it causes a sequence of instructions stored in memory to be retrieved and executed.

CU comprises
- Fetch Unit: Fetches an instruction from memory- Decode Unit: Decode an instruction
- Execute Unit: Signal ALU to execute instruction
- Instruction Register (IR): Contains a copy of current instruction
- Program Counter Register (PC): Contains the memory address of the next instruction the unit is to load

Note: It works on fetch-execute cycle

Primary Memory Unit (RAM)
it consists of 3 registers in order to interact with the CPU.

- Memory Address Register(MAR): stores address of data to be read from or written to
- Memory Data Register(MDR): stores data that is read or to be written
- Command Register(CMD): stores the command to be executed

Device Controller Interface
It includes the following as part of the interface:
- Data Register
- Command Registers
- Status flags with includes Done, Busy and Error Code

Two ways CPU initiate I/O
- Polling
Simplest way for CPU keeps polling the device to see the state of the I/O. If I/O not done then CPU executes a busy-wait command to wait for the I/O to end.
Note: this method will waste precious processor cycle

- Interrupt
A more complicated way is to have CPU implement an interrupt request flag. When I/O is done interrupt request flag is set to signal the end of I/O.
The Interrupt handler usually needs to perform a Context Switch to save the state of CPU at the time, so that it can be reused later.

Direct Memory Access (DMA)
Transfer data to and from primary memory address without CPU intervention.

It relieves CPU of data transfer operation. CPU can start a DMA block transfer and then perform other work in parallel with DMA operation. This significantly increase machine I/O performance and increase CPU throughout.

The two techniques:

o System Call
§ OS provides stub function which the user program can call and once called the stub function will switch processor to supervisor mode by trap instructions.
§ The user process gains ability to execute privileged instruction

o Message Passing
§ Os provides send() system call which user programs can call and waits for the result with receive() operation.
§ The System function is executed by the kernel process.(user process do not gain ability to execute privileged instruction)

Note: System calls are more efficient than message passing because message passing has cost of message formation or copying and process multiplexing and while system call just requires a trap command.

Definition of Operation System (OS)
Definition: OS is a program that acts as an intermediary between user and computer hardware. It provides an environment in which user can run programs in a convenient and efficient manner but provides no useful function by itself (Note: OS is a pure overhead of real work).

Types of Software
Application Software: It is intended to solve a specific problem or provides generic tools to end users

System Software: It provides a general programming environment where programmers can create specific application.

OS seen as Resource Manager
-An OS creates resource abstraction
Resource abstraction is when OS hides the actual tasks needed to manage and use resources by providing simpler commands to access these resources. However this simplified usage limits flexibility.

-An OS manages resource sharing
There are two kinds of sharing, the first kind is Space-multiplex sharing and the second kind is Time-multiplex sharing.

Space-multiplex sharing is achieved by dividing a resource into two or more distinct units and allocates each to a different process.

Time-multiplex sharing is achieved by allocating an entire resource to a process for a period of time. E.g. CPU

Resource isolation is a technique which prevents unauthorized access of resources in a process by another process. E.g. RAM

Multiprogramming is a technique for sharing of CPU among runnable processes.However it does not improve any single process’s performance but can improve the overall system performance.

Playing with MYSQL Database

Recently i have get my hands dirty with MYSQL Database.

Basically what is a MySQL you may ask. Well, it is a multithreaded, multi-user SQL database management system.

MySQL is popular for web applications and acts as the database component of the LAMP, MAMP, and WAMP platforms (Linux/Mac/Windows-Apache-MySQL-PHP/Perl/Python), and for open-source bug tracking tools like Bugzilla. Its popularity for use with web application is closely tied to the popularity of PHP, which is often combined with MySQL. PHP and MySQL are essential components for running popular content management systems such as WordPress and Drupal blogging platforms. Wikipedia runs on MediaWiki software, which can also use PHP and a MySQL database.

It is considered a powerful database system compare to some other database such as microsoft access which is mainly used for standalone system. The best part of the story is that you can get Mysql server free of charge (although the "free" version is a community server, but nevertheless it functions just like the retail counterpart).

Calculator How-To Using Java 2 Part 2

Today, I shall continue with the guide on Calculation How-To. In the previous part, we have discussed about the 4 fundamental steps to create this little calculator program.

Instead of scratching on the surface, I will go a bit deeper into the topic this time. I will not touch on the first 3 steps as I feel that it shouldn't be at your wits' end. Easy as pie I suppose! I will dive straight into the Step 4 and give you quite a handful of additional information that you will need in your development.

How a real calculator works (Implementation of Stack) - The Program Design

I will be using 2 Stacks here. The first Stack is used to convert an infix expression to a postfix expression.

Well, an infix expression is something like 5 + 2 where the operator is in the center. Infix is the most commonly used expression taught in school. However, a postfix is something special. The operator is at the back. It is used by computers to evaluate results from certain expression.

Illustration of conversion between the infix and the postfix expression below:

An algorithm has to be used for this kind of conversion. You can check out one of the algorithms here.

The second Stack is the real stuff that does the computation.

As i have mentioned previously, the whole expression is read by your program. One by one, the digits are stored into the Stack. However whenever an operator ( be it +, -, *, or / in the expression) is encountered, the program will pop the last two values out and evaluate them and then push the result back into the stack. Likewise, the program will complete all the operators and pop out the last value in the Stack as final result.

Calculator How-To Using Java 2 Part 1

Ok. Here is a little guide for those who wanna make a calculator using java 2 for whatever reasons. My guide is broken up as steps. Each step is crucial, please follow them carefully.

1. First draft out your gui layout.

Illustrated Layout below

Note: Of course you can always come out with our own fancy design.

In the above layout, you have the basic digit buttons and the 4 operator buttons( + - X* / ).
And yeah, never forget your decimal operator and your = operator. These are few neccessary buttons that you will need to make any kind of calculators.

2. Using Eclipse's Visual Editor to create your layout.
If you do not have Eclipse, download the latest version here.
Note: If you have no clue of how to use the Visual Editor. A tutorial can be found here.
It is always good to google it around to find what you need.

3. Get your buttons working.
In order for your buttons to be functional, You will need Action Listener.
A simple tutorial on this topic can be found here.

4. How a real calculator works (Implementation of Stack)
Illustration below

This is how a calculator works. When a digit button is pressed on the calculator, the value of the button goes into the stack. For operation 5 + 2, the value will enter the stack first then follow by 2. When the + operation is encountered, the 2 values ( 5 and 2 ) will be popped out from the stack. The result of 5 + 2 is then computed and pushed back into the stack.

I shall end my little guide here. The 4 steps might be short, but it can be quite a lot for you to digest. Just take your time to understand.
